Shingles is a painful skin condition caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus. Although it can affect anyone who has previously had chickenpox, the risk of developing shingles and experiencing complications increases with age and in people with a severely weakened immune system.

Who can have the shingles vaccine?

The NHS shingles vaccination programme has specific eligibility criteria. From September 2025, the NHS programme includes people aged 65 and 70 as they become eligible, as well as eligible people aged 70–79, and adults aged 18 and over who are severely immunocompromised. Eligibility can depend on your age and individual circumstances.
